In a different section of this blog I mention timing. Whereas timing is crucial throughout your whole day, it can really add to the magic of Sydney Harbour and your experience. Picking your boat - What to take into account
Picking your boat - What to take into account
How many guests will you have?
Will they require seating throughout the evening or would they be happy standing?
Where would you like to say your vows: outdoors, inside, upstairs or downstairs?
Would you like people to be seated for your vows?
Would you like a vessel with a large outer deck or would you prefer a bigger entertainment area?
What kind of entertainment will you have, where will they fit?
What kind of eating arrangements would be suitable?
Will you get the optimum view from your location?
There are many things to take into consideration here to make everything perfect but we are aware of all of these and are here to help.
Our boats vary between such different styles that there is no mood or setting we couldn’t match. Take a look at some of our examples;

The schedule
Guidelines are always important to ensure everything runs smoothly so having a schedule is something that is a must do!
From experience we know that time flies when you are enjoying yourself, before you know it the cake hasn’t even been cut and you don’t have much time!
Here are some things that you need to take into consideration when planning a harbour cruise;
Ceremony and or reception
Ceremony and or reception
Are you thinking about having your complete day on the boat? We would advise people who are thinking of having their vows onboard to consider a 5 hour charter instead of four. Time gets consumed very quickly between pictures and signing of the registrar.
If however, you will saying your vows at a different location before embarking than it is crucial to take timing into consideration when choosing a time and location for your chosen vessel and to make sure your guests are aware of how important keeping time is.
Sometimes these can be long and take up extra time so it is important to keep note of your schedule.
Buffet, A-la-carte, Cocktail
Buffet, A-la-carte, Cocktail
Take into account what kind of food you will be having, how much time this will consume and how you can arrange everything around that.
Cutting of the cake
Cutting of the cake
This can often slip the mind so before your big day consider when you would most prefer this to take place and what you want to do e.g. share between guest, keep top tier etc. And be sure to tell your function host so that they can take on the responsibility of this.
Goodbyes and Thank you
Goodbyes and Thank you
From past functions it’s easy to see that the last few words between guests and newlyweds are always last minute. Nobody wants to say goodbye after such a wonderful evening right? Well this is one very important part not to forget and get the timing right with because if left to the last minute then you may not get the opportunity to meet every guest!
Catering
Generally, boats will offer the following dinning options from which to choose from. Formal dinning is not offered on all boats due to the limitations of their galley (kitchen). Make sure you read through the menus of each boat that we promote as each has its own unique food and beverage menus.
The buffet option usually comes in 2 styles, informal or formal. With the informal style, tables are not usually setup with cutlery, guests will help them selves to the buffet and pickup rolled cutlery, then sit casually around the boat. The formal buffet usually has tables set with cutlery and wine glasses.
Finger food brought to guests on trays by wait staff
This is a sit down or A-la-cart style. Formal options usually contain either 2 or 3 courses. If you choose the 2 course option, you select between having a entre and main or a main and desert. The mains will be brought to your seated guests in an alternate sever style
Every boat differs in menu and we will assist you in picking the perfect one for you and your guests. Check out examples of our catering options through the Fleet >.
Drinks
Beverages are similar to dining in terms of variety and adaptation and every vessel offers different packages at fluctuating price ranges. For example, you can get a standard package which would include the boats preference of beer, wine, champagne and soft drinks or you could get more of a selection by choosing to indulge in the house spirits as part of your package. Check out an example of our beverage packages through The Fleet (or out in an example of beverage package here as well)
The best part of these packages is your own personal input. Some vessels will give you the option of upgrading your beer, wine or champagne from their selection to your personal tastes. So, if there is a certain type of Chardonnay you’d like to savour, Brut Reserve you’d prefer to toast with or twenty year old whiskey that has always been one of your favourites, don’t hesitate to include it in your day.
The Ceremony
If you choose to exchange vows during your cruise, then this can be the most important part of your day. It’s essential to have all aspects covered to perfect your moment. From what we’ve seen on the Harbour we know what these things are and are prepared to make sure every one of them is considered, for example;
There are many beautiful coves and parts of the Harbour to give you the best back drop e.g. Farm Cove, from this advantage point you will have both the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour bridge as your back drop
Sydney Harbour is beautiful regardless of the day but if you organise your timing right, sunset can be a remarkably romantic setting. So be sure to ask our experts for their advise.
Also, timing is very important in regards to fitting everything in. As I have mentioned before, time flies when you are having fun and you may not have everything done. So if you are considering having your ceremony on board as well as your reception, then our experts would advise you to extend a standard four hour cruise to 5 hours, so you can relax and take everything in your stride!
Be sure to seal the deal of your wedding vows in style with a glass of champagne. Ask your function host to provide you with celebratory glasses when signing the registrar.
Decor
Every boat can be customized to your style and theme. Whatever your colour theme or preference of decorations, seating arrangements, flowers and more, each vessel can be adapted to suit your desires. Most boats will give you (or your wedding organising team) an opportunity to board before the big event to add bells and whistles so that the boat is beautifully decorated for your wedding.
Decore
Options
As well as your own additions most vessels will offer you a variety of options to add to your day.
Red carpet for an elegant entrance and pictures
A signing table with white table cloth for your convenience
Some boats will be willing to provide white ribbon on the exterior to add to the theme
Arranged seating for your ceremony to make it comfortable and accessible for your guests
Microphone for the comfort of your celebrant or even for the speeches
IPod/phone dock, if you choose not to have entertainment or a DJ, then you can make the most of a personal playlist on your own phone that you may have out together for the day
Will children be a part of your wedding day? When considering your setup on the day, why not think about something to keep the kids entertained? A play area such as a playpen or games for your younger guests could be the ideal addition.

Tips and Hints
There are always little parts of a wedding day that can be easily overlooked in the middle of all the planning but at Liquid Sydney Cruises those are things we like to think about. Here are a few extras that we considered and have seen over the many wedding cruises we’ve seen on the Harbour;
- It’s important to make time to drop off your celebrant after your ceremony. As much as they will enjoy sharing your day, they may prefer to leave the afters to you and your guests
- Think about whether you celebrant will be needing the use of a microphone
- Consider your music. Would you be happy letting your DJ/band have free reign or would you be happier to having a personal playlist you created. Make sure you have spoken to your entertainment regarding music preferences – do they have your aisle walk and first dance tracks?
- Make sure the vessel you choose is spacious enough for your first dance and for general activity
- Take the weather into account. What time of year is your wedding? You may have hoped for a warm sunny day and planned most of your celebrations outside but always consider the alternative when choosing a boat so that you will have a back-up plan
- One thing that is often forgotten about when cruising on the Harbour is the pickup of all your belongings at the end of the night.
– Tradition is that new couples keep the top tier of their cake, do you want to do this? Who will carry this for you at the end of the night?
– Gifts need to collected and kept safely, have you anyone assigned to this job?
– Would you like to keep your wedding flowers and decorations?
– If you have brought your own alcohol or food are you going to take these with you at the end of the night or would you be happier leaving them behind?
A lot of boats may give you the option of leaving all your personals onboard until the next morning when you have more time but make sure you discuss this with your function coordinator before-hand so that everyone is clear about what is being done with your things.
We want to give you every opportunity to have a smooth day and will do our best to consider every aspect so sail with us on your big day and you will have one with a happy ending.
